Admittedly, Runaways is a filler album. What do I mean by that? Well, it’s an album that I put out just to fill the gaps between releasing music. Because I had a lot of records laying around from sporadic activity (as explained about the gap between 2013-present), and rather than releasing a bunch of singles, I decided to group them all together as an album showcasing a more technological side.
There’s only one song on here that has any guitar playing from me, which is “Warm Welcome” (recorded in 2023 while living in Minneapolis). The other song with guitar “Torn Together” is done by the great Bradley Fish, if you know that name, and originally appeared on a friends-only album I put out in 2011 called Cool Spacey Guy.
While it is an instrumental album, it’s less instrumentation than Walking On Sound & I Was Just Playin’. It’s sample heavy (not as any that need cleared, but sound-samples triggered & layered in DAWs. There are no recognizable “samples” like Rap artists do, but meaning sounds designed from other sounds). “Water’s Fine”, “Torn Together” & “Warm Welcome” do feature live synth play.
The title testifies to the fact that the songs are recordings that I’ve lost the tracked-out session files to, and they can’t be further edited. They were good enough masters though to be released to the public. The cover image also played a part in the title, and actually inspired the assembly. One late afternoon/early evening, I was in SoHo & took some photos, & this is one of some people walking down Mercer Street (between Prince & Spring Street). When examining the photo afterwards, I’d thought: “what if these ppl are runaways in NYC?”). Side-note: it’s fascinating to me that this photo is just a random moment in their lives without them even being aware or identifiable, & it’s now an album cover. Do they remember this day? What are their lives like now? Are they even still alive? Would they know it’s them?
Long story short about the music, I didn’t want these songs to be any that would never see light of day, so I compiled them into an album.
I hope you enjoy.
